Discover eastern America's largest and most popular caverns.  Journey through the U.S. natural landmark noted for its profuse variety  of formations and unsurpassed natural color.  The caverns were discovered by Andrew Campbell on August 13, 1878, when he and his 13-year-old nephew, Quint, had three friends lower them by rope into an opening they had just  uncovered.  The natural wonders of the caverns glistened in the candlelight, and it's been a continuing history lesson ever since.  Now, from well-lighted, paved walkways, you can explore cathedral-sized rooms with  ceilings ten stories high, filled with towering stone columns and crystal-clear pools.  See the world's largest musical instrument, The Great Stalacpipe Organ.  Stalactites covering 3.5 acres of the surrounding caverns  produce tones of symphonic quality when electronically tapped by rubber-tipped mallets.  Learn interesting facts like percolating calcareous water dripping from the cavern ceiling forms stalactites, which hold tight to the  ceiling, and stalagmites, which mound up from the floor.  It takes Mother Nature 120 years to form one cubic inch…visit her favorite Virginia kitchen and see what's been cooking!
