Located in the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the falls consist of cascading rapids and several 20-ft. waterfalls
that have a total drop of 76 feet in a 3,500-ft. run. From upstream, a wider Potomac River constricts at Great Falls from 2,500 feet to 60 and 100 feet along the gorge for over a mile. The rocky walls
and steep cliffs that rise above the flow of churning currents offer a view that is more spectacular than any rapids fall line of any eastern river. There are three observation areas just a short hike from
the Great Falls Park Visitor Center. The center, itself, has a model of the river and falls that will give you a good perspective from where you might want to view them. It's an easy hike to one of the
most breathtaking views of Virginia. Join onlookers from Maryland, from across the river, in watching kayakers try to make their way upstream against the massive, nonstop currents. Overlook Number 2 in
only 200 yards from the Visitor Center, and it is handicapped accessible. |
